Work visa in Portugal

1) What is the visa de procura de trabalho and how long does it last?
It is a temporary residence visa for non-EU citizens that allows them to stay in Portugal to seek employment. It has an initial duration of 120 daysextendable only once for a period of one year. 60 daysreaching a maximum of 180 days.
2) What documents do I need to apply?
Prior registration with the IEFP, valid passport, travel insurance, return ticket, and livelihood equivalent to three minimum wages (€2,610). Alternatively, maintenance commitment signed by a citizen or resident in Portugal. In addition, apostilled criminal record certificate and proof of registration in the IEFP.
3) Who is eligible for this visa and who is not?
Aimed at those who are looking for a subordinate employment contract in Portugal. It does not apply to freelancers, digital nomads or holders of other residence visas. You must not be subject to an entry ban in the Schengen area.
4) What happens if I do not find a job within the deadline?
You must leave Portugal. You will only be able to apply for a new visa de procura de trabalho. one year after the expiration of the previous one.

NISS and customer number

5) What is the NISS and what is it for?
The NISS identifies you to the Portuguese Social Security. It is essential to work legally and access benefits (sick leave, unemployment, pensions). It also makes it easier to open bank accounts and apply for loans.
6) What documents are required to apply for the NISS?
Online form and digital copy of identity document (DNI for EU citizens or passport + residence permit for third countries). If a representative acts: power of attorney and identification of the representative. The application is free.
7) How do I obtain my SNS patient number?
It is assigned when you present yourself for the first time in a health center or public hospital. For SNS coverage, link the number to your ID card, TAX IDaddress in Portugal and valid residence permit. In exceptional situations there may be assistance without all the data.
8) How much does it cost to apply for the NISS or the client number?
The assignment of the NISS is free of charge. The patient number is also obtained free of charge during the first consultation at a public health unit.

Homologation of academic degrees

9) What types of recognition are there for university degrees?
Three modalities: automatic, level y specific. Automatic applies to degrees with identical level and nature to Portuguese degrees (typical term. ~30 days). The level one equates your degree to a bachelor's/master's/doctorate degree. The specific one compares your training to a specific course and is usually the most detailed and expensive.
10) What documents do I need to submit for university homologation?
Apostille of diploma, transcript of records, syllabus and proof of internship. For level and specific: authenticated copies of diploma and academic record, plus statement with the classification of the training area (CNAEF/FOS).
11) Who can apply for high school equivalence in Portugal?
Any Portuguese or foreign citizen with legal residence. It is processed in a educational center of the area of residence. Usual term: ~30 days.
12) What is required to validate the baccalaureate?
Certificates of attendance apostilled and translated a copy of identity card and official application form. Information on grading scale and educational system of origin may be required.
13) How much do homologation processes cost and how long do they take?
Recognition automatic: ~33 € y ~30 days. Level y specific: frequently > 500 € and up to ~90 days. Baccalaureate equivalency: some schools charge fees; typical time frame. ~30 days.

Driver's license exchange

14) Can I drive in Portugal with my foreign license without exchanging it?

15) What documents do I need to exchange an EU/EEA license?
Identity card, communication of residence (if there is no citizen card), certification of tax domicile, passport if applicable, original license, psychological certificate (C/D/E) and electronic medical certificate sent by your physician to the ITM.
16) When should I redeem an OECD or CPLP license?
If you meet the conditions, you may not redeem immediately (valid only in Portugal and without new categories). You must redeem to enable new categories or if the license expires. Requirements: same as EU/EEA + certificate of authenticity of the license.
17) What are the deadlines for exchanging licenses from countries with agreements?
With a residence permit: you can drive 90 days with your foreign license and you must initiate the exchange. Enter 90 days and 2 years you can apply for the exchange but you can no longer drive. After 2 years you need to pass a practical test.
18) What happens if my country is not a party to the conventions?
You must perform theoretical exam y practical for each category of your license. Each exam costs 30 €in addition to the exchange.
19) How much does the license exchange cost?
The exchange costs 30 €with 10 % discount if processed online. For non-adherents, add the cost of the exams.

Sworn translations

20) What is a sworn or certified translation?
Translation performed by an authorized professional who declares under oath before a notary/authority that the translated content is true to the originalby granting legal validity in Portugal.
21) Do I have to translate all foreign documents?
General rule: yes. Exceptions: certain EU public documents with multilingual form or when the official is fluent in English, French or Spanish in civil, property or commercial registry acts.
22) Who can perform the sworn translation in Portugal?
Notaries, conservators or registry officers; attorneys and solicitors; chambers of commerce; qualified translators with certified signature; Portuguese consulates or consulates of the issuing country.
23) How is a translation certified?
The translator appears before the notary/authority and declares under oath the fidelity of the translation. The record is attached to the translation and allows its official use.
24) What types of documents usually require sworn translation?
Birth, marriage, death certificates; academic diplomas; criminal records; contracts; powers of attorney; articles of association. Some EU documents with multilingual form may be exempt.
25) Can I translate my documents at the consulate instead of a notary?
Yes, this can be done at the Portuguese consulate in the country of origin or at the country's consulate in Portugal, useful for unusual language combinations or documents that will continue to be used in the country of origin.

Accounting and tax consulting: IRS, IMI and IUC

26) When is the IRS return filed?
Between the April 1 and the June 30. Settlement note until July 31 and, if there is payment, it is due until August 31.
27) When and how is IMI paid?
Annual payment. ≤ 100 €: May; between 100 € y 500 €: May and November; > 500 €May, August and November. Ways: multibank, homebanking, direct debit or in person.
28) When do I have to pay the IUC?
At 2025each year in the anniversary month of the registration fee. Categories A-E: until the end of that month. F-G: until the end of January. First year: until 30 days after registration. From 2026 there will be a single date (February 28).
29) What happens if I do not meet the reporting or payment deadlines?
Untimely or unpaid IRS returns: penalties ranging from 150 € y 3.750 €. IMI/IUC: interest and kickbacks; may also block other transactions (e.g., transferring a vehicle).
30) How is the amount of IMI and IUC calculated?
IMI: VPT (Valor Patrimonial Tributario) × municipal tax. IUCemissions: depends on vehicle type, year of registration, engine capacity and CO₂ emissions.
