What is NISS and why do you need it?

The NISS is a unique and personal number that identifies each citizen in the Portuguese Social Security system. It is essential for those who work or wish to work in Portugal, as it allows the corresponding discounts, access to entitlements such as unemployment benefits, medical leave, retirement pensions, parental leave and family allowance. It also facilitates access to the Segurança Social Direta portal, opening bank accounts and applying for loans. Any foreign or national citizen without a citizen card can apply for it. Without a NISS, you will not be able to declare your income correctly or benefit from the labor and social rights to which you are entitled.

Basic documents

  • Fill in the form on the Social Security portal.
  • Attach a scanned copy of a valid identity document.
  • If you are an EU citizen: present your national identity card.

    If you are from a third country: present passport and title or authorization of residence.

Representation and process

  • If the procedure is carried out by a representative (employer or lawyer):
    • Attach power of attorney or statement authorizing third parties.
    • Attach the representative's identity document.
  • After submitting the application:
    • You will receive a confirmation email with instructions for in-person collection of the NISS.
    • The pick-up can only be done by the person himself/herself by presenting his/her identification document.
    • This procedure is free of charge.

How to obtain the SNS patient number?

Initial procurement

  • It is assigned the first time you visit a public health unit (health center or hospital).
  • For the SNS to cover your expenses, the number must be associated with:
    • Your identity document.
    • Your Portuguese NIF.
    • A complete address in Portugal.
    • A valid residence permit.
  • In exceptional situations, it is possible to receive assistance even without having all the information.

  • Present identity document and proof of legal residence.
  • Link the patient number with your NISS and address to facilitate billing and coverage.
  • Although the number is assigned during the first consultation, you can expedite the process by providing your NIF and residency authorization at the health center.
